Roman still hadn’t returned home when I left the house in the early evening. Nicholas had made tea to settle me down, and we talked about the many Christmases he’d seen. The fire’s shadows mingled with the Christmas lights, and it was quiet. I felt much better, but was anxious to get to my apartment and see for myself that Kat was okay.

Parting with Nicholas was never easy, but this time there was no sadness, no pain, physical or mental. He waved to me from the snow-framed doorway, the Christmas tree only slightly visible behind him. Not that it could outshine his smile, or my own. I sang with the Christmas music all the way home.
